Carla Gugino and David Boreanaz Made A Movie About Basketball Playing Nuns Oct 10, 2011
Cathy Rush is one of the best coaches to ever coach an organized sport. Back in the 70s she took this tiny Catholic women’s college and led them to an unprecedented three AIAW titles in basketball.
And if you aren’t a baby boomer that sentence means NOTHING to you. So history lesson.
After the passage of Title IX women started participating in sports (beyond tennis) because they actually COULD. In response to the rapidly growing number of women athletes the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women was created. From 1972 to 1982 is governed nearly all women’s collegiate sports and national championships. So when Cathy Rush took her tiny school and won three AIAW Titles she was winning the equivalent of three NCAA Titles.
Rush, married to former NBA referee Ed T. Rush has kind of a ridiculously good record as a basketball coach. In her years at Immaculata she went 149 and 15. Guys. She only lost FIFTEEN GAMES ever. If you get her to coach your team of dead people there is still a 91% chance you will win.
And she did all this with a team fielded from the 700 students of the all women Immaculata College. These ladies were dresses during their games and were educated by straight up nuns. The story of their three AIAW Titles is basically a Catholic Bad News Bears. Someone should totally make a movie about them–
Oh right they did. The Mighty Macs has been making the festival circuit since 2009 and it’s finally hitting theaters in wide release October 21. Carla Gugino plays Cathy Rush. And Boothe himself plays her husband.
So now both stars of Bones have appeared in uplifting basketball films. I’m betting David Boreanaz took this role BECAUSE Emily Deschanel was in Glory Road. He was all TWO CAN PLAY THAT GAME DESCHANEL. I especially like how they both play doting spouses of badass super successful basketball coaches.
But yeah, Carla Gugino and Ellen Burnstyn in a movie together about ladies basketball? With short hair Boreanaz? And some sort of young nun who is secretly AMAZING at basketball? SIGN ME UP INTERNET.
