Cordelia - Buffy by Zuleikha Character Quote: "I'm not a sniveling whiny little Cry-Buffy." (Rm W/A Vu)
First Encounter: "Welcome to the Hellmouth". Cordelia identifies Buffy as a possible "cool" kid because of her LA origins. Their burgeoning friendship quickly sours when Buffy also chooses to befriend Willow. It dies when Buffy is hunting a vampire in The Bronze, hears a noise, and holds a stake up to Cordelia's throat.
Relationship Map: After the first episode, Cordelia identifies Buffy as part of the loser-gang, fit to be tormented and taunted. The first steps towards friendship begin in "Invisible Girl" when Buffy must protect Cordelia from the attack of an invisible girl. When Cordelia is changing in a broomstick closet, the two share a moment of confidence in which Cordelia opens up to Buffy about the chinks in Cordelia's seemingly invulnerable army of ice. Cordelia also becomes one of the few Sunnydale residents to know that Buffy is the Slayer. However, their relationship remains antagonistic with Cordelia determined to preserve her Queen C position in Sunnydale High and Buffy viewing Cordelia as a nemesis.
In Season 2, the relationship alters. Because of her car and awareness of the supernatural chaos in Sunnydale, Cordelia becomes a reluctant ally of the Scooby Gang. In "When She Was Bad," Cordelia tells Buffy to "spank your inner moppet" and get over whatever Buffy's problem is. Cordelia's directness allows her to penetrate Buffy's defenses in a way few others can. After Cordelia and Xander begin openly dating, Cordelia and Buffy grow closer as well. Buffy is the one to whom Cordelia confesses her feelings of love about Xander. However, although this is never directly stated on the show, it is clearly implied that a part of Cordelia resents Buffy's Slayerness and the hold that this has on Xander. She feels, probably correctly, that Xander's true love is given to Buffy and that however much Cordelia gives to Xander, it will never be enough to make her #1 in his heart.
In Season 3 this explodes in "Homecoming," when Buffy and Cordelia bitterly compete for the Homecoming Queen crown. Although the differences are mostly resolved by the close of the episode, tension remains in their relationship. When Cordelia and Xander break-up, it also spells the end of her friendship with Buffy. Although Willow is the cause of the break-up, Cordelia cuts her ties to the entire Gang, including Buffy. In "The Wish," Buffy tries to comfort Cordelia outside of the Bronze, but shoves her into a dumpster during a vampire fight. Harmony and the former Cordettes snicker at Cordelia's misfortune. This may have been the final straw, and it is made clear that Cordelia blames the end of her picture-perfect life on Buffy's arrival in Sunnydale and the subsequent supernatural complications. Although Cordelia does aid the Scooby Gang in the fight against the Mayor, she never reconciles with Buffy.
Post-Sunnydale contacts have been fleeting. In "I Will Always Remember You," Buffy and Cordelia are on socially polite terms, but very far from their late Season 2 and early Season 3 closeness. Cordelia now thinks of Buffy primarily in terms of how Buffy affected Angel. In return, Buffy seems to have forgotten all of the growth that she witnessed in Cordelia. Her few post-ATS comments about Cordelia have all concerned Cordelia's shallow, materialistic nature.
Character Reflection: It is an oft-commented upon fact that Cordelia began as a mirror-character for Buffy. We are told by Buffy herself that Cordelia is who Buffy was before Slaying called to her. Ironically, the reversal is now also true. Just as Buffy has been called to be a Slayer, so, too, has Cordelia been called to be a Seer, with hints of an independent destiny including a Chosen One role. The chief difference is that while both callings place their owners' life in jeopardy, Buffy's gives her superpowers to deal with it whereas Cordelia's, to date, has provided Cordelia nothing more than pain. Both Buffy and Cordelia are accused by fans and other characters on the show of self-centeredness. In Buffy's case, this may be attributed to her need for self-reliance and reluctance to open up to others lest they be hurt in battles that Buffy should be fighting. Cordelia's appears to be a slightly different defense mechanism: a mask that she uses to keep people from realizing how deeply vulnerable the visions make her. The person who took pride in her tactlessness has now been forced to literally see the world through other's eyes.
However, like Buffy, Cordelia has discovered a meaning in her curse. For all the drawbacks to the visions, they also provide Cordelia with a sense of meaning and purpose that fulfills an emptiness she rarely acknowledged to herself she had. Her graceful acceptance of the visions and willingness to do as they ask of her reveals the kindhearted, caring woman hidden behind the high school mask of cruelty. Although it seems unlikely that Buffy and Cordelia will ever meet again in any setting that will allow them to discover just how closely their lives are now paralleled, it seems a shame. More than any other two characters in the Jossverse, they are mirror-images. Source
