| Une analyse de leur relation: - Citation :
Cordelia - Willow by Zuleikha Character Quote: "It occurs to me that we've never really had the opportunity to talk. You know, woman to woman... with you locked up." ("Doppelgangerland")
First Encounter: At least by junior-high where the popular Cordelia made Willow very aware of Willow's nerdy status. The first encounter on the show is in "Welcome to the Hellmouth" when Cordelia is giving Buffy the run down on Sunnydale, encounters Willow at a drinking fountain, and comments on Willow seeing the "softer side of Sears."
Relationship Map: In the show's beginning, Cordelia considers Willow nothing more than a nerdy loser. Willow, in turn, despises Cordelia, at one point (possibly in junior high) forming a "We Hate Cordelia" club with Xander. Cordelia is cutting to Willow and, presumably, also represents a lot of things that Willow wants but does not have: stylish fashions, popularity, and boyfriends. After Cordelia becomes a Scooby Gang ally (by Season 2), the two work together but do not like each other. Willow's jealousy of Cordelia explodes into anger in "Innocence" when she discovers Cordelia and Xander's relationship and Cordelia now truly has everything Willow has wanted. The exact moment that their social-friendship becomes more genuine is unclear, but the trigger for it is probably Willow's relationship with Oz. In addition to the fact that Oz is good for Willow's self-confidence, liking someone else helps Willow deal with her Xander feelings.
Throughout the end of Season 2, and certainly by the beginning of Season 3, they appear to be genuinely friendly with each other. This all ends in "Lovers Walk." Cordelia and Oz go to the factory to rescue the kidnapped Willow and Xander and discover the latter two kissing. Cordelia takes the betrayal very hard. She cuts off all her ties to both Willow and Xander and with them the Scooby Gang. This proves particularly isolating for Cordelia. Joining the Scooby Gang cost her control of the Cordettes and much of her popularity. When she rejects the Scooby Gang, she has no one to return to. However, rather than forgive Willow and Xander for their betrayal, Cordelia picks up the pieces of her old life and works on restoring herself to her former friends and former days of glory.
In "Doppelgangerland," she confronts Vamp-Willow and finally has a chance to express all her feelings of betrayal and rage. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the conversation is ever repeated with the real Willow. When Wesley shows up in "Bad Girls," it marks Cordelia's return to Scooby Gang allying. It also marks a return to her old social-friendship relationship with Willow. Cordelia makes it clear through body language and her comments that she is helping because of Wesley, not because of any residual affection for the Gang, who in turn do not seem terribly affectionate for Cordelia.
However, in "Blind Date" at the end of Season 1 Angel, Willow and Cordelia have a conversation on the phone about encrypting files. The conversation seems genuinely pleasant with no trace of the rancor that had been characteristic of encounters during BTVS. In "Disharmony" in Season 2, Cordelia again calls Willow, this time to gossip about Harmony. Although their conversation is friendly, it is clear by the lack of information that they know about each other's life, that post-LA contact has been fleeting. Their friendly terms may derive from the very distance between them.
Character Reflection: There are not the obvious parallels between Willow and Cordelia that there are between Cordelia and Buffy. However, that does not mean that the two characters do not share similar features. Although Cordelia often said stupid comments in classroom scenes in BTVS, she has a revealing moment in "Lovers Walk," where she comments that she has practice hiding her intelligence after Xander is surprised by Cordelia's high SAT scores. This comment is backed-up by two moments in "Invisible Girl."
The first would be when Cordelia accidentally establishes that she has indeed read the assigned book-although it would be easy to take the Cliff Notes route. The more telling moment would be when she makes an appointment with her English teacher to talk about her essay, revealing that she put enough energy into the assignment to plan ahead and have an outline as well as that she cared enough to work one-on-one. Add to Cordelia's hidden intelligence the fact that Willow is presumably also extremely well-off, and one can see in Willow's lack of popularity, a motivation for early Cordelia behavior.
If wealthy Willow can be branded a nerd for her intelligence, then surely even the more stylish Cordelia may face the same fate. To avoid that, Cordelia instead hid her brains behind a veneer of classroom comments so idiotic that they could only be deliberate. Source | |
