- I don't think I agree with NFA being an open ending. Every single character got closure in Ats, the circles are round. And I think that it's a good idea to think that they all died (if you don't read the comics of course). Sure we didn't saw their last minutes, but it was over.
Angel: Instead of letting gods play with him and waiting for destiny to happen, he decided to use his own free will to show them that he had the power to hurt the big powers.
The only reason he was able to defeat Hamilton, was because he was a vampire. Only a couple of scenes before that moment he gave up the one chance to become human again. Angel starts to accept that he is a vampire, and more importantly... he starts to accept himself for who and what he is. And considering his overall journey (selfhate, trying to be a different person), this is incredibly important.
Connor accepted him as his father and his friends trusted him enough to stand by him.
Wesley: Wesley's journey was a tragic one which could only end with his death. And I think that they gave him a fantastic ending; a mix of sacrifice (hero) and suicide (tragedy). And after being destroyed by reality, he finally allowed himself to believe a lie in his last seconds.
Lorne: Another tragedy, one we all saw coming. Lorne was not a warrior, he came to this world because he loves music. He doesn't belong on the battlefield and he figured that out in NFA after doing what he had to do. Lorne always ran and put his fingers in his ears, this time he couldn't which resulted in an epiphany.
Gunn: Finally, after more than 4 years he finds the meaning of the fight. Anne tells him the exact same thing as Angel told Kate. This is why Gunn is the one human who still lives in te last scene. He found a real reason to fight, which is why he joined Angel's team in the first place.
Connor: Connor came back to help his father, he finally accepts Angel as his father. But he also leaves to be the future, to continue what Angel started. (Angel said it himself, he doesn't really die when Connor lives.)
Spike: We have of course the famous scene where people finally love his poems. But much more important is that Spike finally picks up the sword because he believes in what he is going to do,he is not doing it for the prize or because his girl believes in it. He is there because Spike believes in it.
Illyria: Illyria learned the power of love and humanity in this episode. Sure she is still a stranger in our world but she made a huge step this episode by being affected by Wesley's death.
Lindsey: Lindsey went down because he overrated himself, and he got humiliated because of that. He was too dangerous to keep alive but too small to be killed by Angel.
W&H: In the end they are much more powerful, but this battle is for Angel. After 5 years he finally manages to really hurt them, even if it's not a fatal blow.
The arcs ended, and even if we never saw if some of them survived, the series was done. These characters fullfilled their arcs, even if they were tragic sometimes.
It reminds me a bit of Harry Potter; some people love the epilogue because it tells them that everyting is well. But the story was already done the moment we knew for sure that Harry was going to defeat Voldemort. The epilogue doesn't end his arc, because we don't have to know who he married and how his kids are called. We don't have to know if Angel dies or lives either because his arc did end before the scene in the alley. | |
