| - Citation :
- Cordelia \c(o)-rde-lia, cor-delia\ as a girl's name is pronounced kor-DEEL-yah. It is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Cordelia is "heart". Probably from Cordula. Literary: in "King Lear" (1605), Shakespeare portrays Cordelia as a lovable, virtuous woman of rare honesty. He may have adopted the name from Cordeilla, the form used in his source, "Holinshed's Chronicles" (1577).
- Citation :
- "Cordelia" was, according to Whedon, the name of a woman his wife knew and couldn't stand (and he allegedly told her at the time: "but what if the character becomes popular"...) but it works on another level as Shakespeare's Cordelia is known for bluntly speaking the truth even when it's unpleasant and unwise to do so (and for being a lot more loving and loyal than seemed at first sight).
- Citation :
- I thought that Cordelia was named after King Lear's daughter, their stories are pretty similar. Clearly I was wrong.
