- The real story of Angel's vampire name is really chilling and brilliant - probably a retcon since we were most likely meant to think in S1 of BtVS that he actually got that name because of his good looks, but oh my god, is that a great retcon. Vampire Liam deciding to call himself Angel, because his little sister believed he was an angel come to her after his death, is something that fits his evil personality so well, and something Darla would have certainly appreciated for the dark humor and mockery of religion. At the same time, "angel" can also be an "angel of death", so this fits his persona as well. Now, why the Latin word for 'angel' - although Latin is, AFAIK, the language of sermon in Catholicism, I suspect it was simply because "Angelus" sounds mightier and scarier.
I wonder how and when the use of "Angel" and "Angelus" for his souled and soulless self came to be? Spike and Dru call him Angel a lot of times in S2, and they certainly wouldn't have had time to make that a separate name for him since they just found out he had a soul and it's not like he told them "From now on you shall call me Angel!" And Spike continues to refer to him as Angel after he loses his soul again (in Becoming II, for instance). If he had been only called "Angelus" when he was soulless, then Spike in S2 wouldn't even know his name as "Angel". - Citation :
- Angel \a-ngel, an-gel\ as a boy's name (also used as girl's name Angel), is pronounced AHN-hail, AIN-jel. It is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Angel is "messenger; messenger of God". Derived from the Church Latin name Angelus, from Greek "angelos". Biblical: name for the spirit creatures sent by God to men as His messengers. The original Greek form Angelo is more popular now, as Angel is usually a girl's name* (although in Thomas Hardy's 1891 novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", a major male character is named Angel Clare.) Both forms are popular in Spanish-speaking countries. Jockey Angel Cordero.
